‘Other’ Open Poster Show 2015

Part of the Plymouth ‘Other’ Open

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Shoal Arts, still new and still relatively obscure, is pleased to announce the Other Open Poster Show, our second art extravaganza, which has been hastily conceived, organised and planned to occur at virtually the same time as the 2015 Plymouth ‘Other’ Open.

What are you talking about?

We were inspired. After we put out the call for the Plymouth ‘Other’ Open, one of our early supporters on social media mocked up her version of a promo poster for the exhibition. We thought, ‘that’s pretty cool, what if we invite everyone to do that?’ We couldn’t think of a reason not to do it, so we’re doing it. Hey, everyone, design a poster for the 2015 Plymouth ‘Other’ Open and send it to us.

Really? Are you kidding?

Well...no, we’re not kidding.

This idea might be more stupid than your first idea.

Yes, that’s entirely possible.

So say I decide to enter, what do I do?

You design a poster for the Plymouth ‘Other’ Open then send the design to us. We publish all the posters in online galleries on our website and social media, we make prints of them to show during the exhibition, and we print multiples of a few of our favourites to use in promoting the exhibition.

So, who’s eligible for this one?

As with the main exhibition, any artist/designer in the South West. We might also consider designs from outside the region, if we’re in the right mood.

How do I submit a poster design?

Email your submission to us: shoalarts@yahoo.co.uk

Post your submission to us: DevonportLive Arts Venue, 56-58 George Street Devonport Plymouth PL1 4HR

When’s the deadline for submissions?

We’ll accept poster designs right up to the opening of the exhibition, which is Thursday 6 August 2015.

Isn’t this just a way to get people to do your marketing for free?

You could look at it that way, but we’d rather you didn’t. We’re not looking for a sneaky way to get a design or image that we can build a marketing campaign or brand concept around. We’re artists and designers with plenty of our own ideas about how things should look.  For the Other Open Poster Show we’re interested in seeing how other artists and designers interpret our ideas.

What’s in it for me?

Practice on Photoshop? There’s no jury panel for this one, no selection process. If your poster design makes us physically ill, we might not publish it, but otherwise it’s all in. We’ll get an O.O.P.S gallery up and running on our website and social media pages, we’ll figure out some way to present print versions of all the poster designs during the Plymouth ‘Other’ Open in August, and we’ll add your details to our artist database.

Is there a fee?

            Nope.

What’ll happen to my poster design after the exhibition?

A print version will go into the Shoal Arts/Plymouth ‘Other’ Open archive. The online version will stay in the online gallery. There’s no secret file of ‘graphic design work we scammed for free and are going to use as we like forever’.

Hmm, ok. How about some details?

            Here are the submission criteria:

-Submit as many poster designs as you like (y’know a few. not like, 60).

-Size: If you’re emailing your design, image files should be 300dpi jpeg, maximum file size of 3mb. We’ll resize the image for web and print. If you’re posting your design to us, it should be A4 (210mm x 297mm).

-Your name, address, email address, web address if you have one, phone number (let us know which of these details you’d be willing to include in the online gallery).

-Include the following info on the poster design:

            - 2015 Plymouth ‘Other’ Open

            - 6-20 August

            - DevonportLive Arts Venue 56-58 George Street Devonport
