Title: Notes from a Family Album III, Notes from a Family Album IIV
Medium: Screenprint (image size 12cm x 12cm)
These screen prints are part of a larger ongoing series that explores a family history, its relationship to rural Ireland and emigration to America. As a starting point I reuse old family photos and a series of handwritten letters written to my grandmother Kathleen from her sister Margaret. Margaret emigrated to America in the early-mid 20th Century. In my work I aim to unravel a particular relationship between two women and to visualise ideas of gender and its relationship to the cultural, historical and geographical space of the west of Ireland.
These screen-prints combine elements from the found photographs with wallpaper imagery from 92 Farquhar Street, Boston, Massachusetts, the house where Margaret lived.
These works are part of and feed into a wider practice that explores painting in an expanded field. Working with large-scale giclee prints, I respond to the images using hybrid painting strategies that include printmaking and collage.
